Will Spider Veins Shrink Over Time?
Telangiectasias, thread veins, spider veins — no matter what you call them, the appearance of these spindly surface blemishes on your legs is usually not a welcome one.
The good news is that for the half of adults over the age of 50 who develop spider veins, the venous issue doesn’t usually pose anything more than a cosmetic nuisance. Now for the bad news — once spider veins form, they aren’t going anywhere unless you have us treat them.
As cardiovascular experts, Dr. Madaiah Revana and our team at Humble Cardiology have extensive experience helping patients to address venous issues like spider veins, which are the smaller cousins to varicose veins.
In the following, we review what we know about spider veins and how we can help clear your legs.
The making of spider veins
Spider veins certainly earn their name — they appear as spindly blue or red lines on the surface of your skin that can look like a web.
These blood vessels are part of the superficial vein network in your legs that circulates about 10% of the blood in your lower limbs — the bulk of the work is accomplished by deep veins.
While the spider part of the name is certainly clear, interestingly, spider veins don’t form in veins. Instead, they form in tiny blood vessels (called capillaries, venules, and arterioles) that connect your larger veins and arteries, so the name spider veins isn't technically correct.
Names aside, spider veins are linked to these risk factors:
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Hormone changes in women
- Trauma
- Standing for long periods
- Pregnancy
- Sun exposure
- Being overweight or having obesity
- Aging
Whatever risk factor led to spider veins forming on your legs, the end result is one that’s there to stay unless you take action. In fact, not only do these veins not shrink or go away on their own, they typically worsen over time.
Turning back the clock on spider veins
Given how prevalent spider veins are, we’re pleased to report that there are some fantastic solutions for clearing your legs of these pesky vascular lesions, and we offer some of them here.
Cosmetic laser technologies have come a long way, and more people are turning to them to get rid of spider and varicose veins, as well as body hair and tattoos. In terms of numbers, more than 3.1 million Americans availed themselves of laser skin treatments in 2023 alone.
At or practice, we offer three quick-and-easy treatments for spider veins:
- VeinGogh® — we deliver microbursts of laser energy to break up the vein
- Candela® — another laser technology that breaks apart spider veins
- Sclerotherapy — we inject an agent that collapses the vein
Depending upon how many spider veins you have, we can usually treat them in 1-3 sessions and there’s no downtime afterward. After your spider vein treatments, it can take a few weeks for the treated veins to be naturally absorbed by your body, but your patience will be rewarded when you have smooth legs again.
To hit the reset button on your legs through state-of-the-art spider vein treatments, it’s as simple as contacting one of our two offices in Humble or Houston, Texas, to schedule an appointment.
